The NCA path for internationally trained lawyers has four stages: your assessment, your assigned exams and courses, the Certificate of Qualification, then your province's bar admission process. This is the map of Study Circles: each step links to the post that covers it in detail. Facts are from the NCA's pages, checked 18 Oct 2026. **1. Get assessed** - Apply online to the NCA ($400 plus tax). Your law school sends official transcripts directly to the NCA. - Since 1 March 2026, applicants complete a language screening test before assessment, unless a valid accepted language test from the last two years exempts them. - Your assessment lists what you must complete. Most candidates get at least the five mandatory subjects: [how many NCA exams will I get?](https://lexn.ca/circles/general/209d835b-7fbb-43ec-a1b9-9fbeb5ffaf93/how-many-nca-exams-will-i-get-core-optional-and-why-assignments-differ) **2. Complete your exams and courses** - NCA exams run in 12 sessions a year, online, open book (hard copy only), three hours each, $500 plus tax per exam: [online exam rules](https://lexn.ca/circles/general/1478c261-322e-4e27-9e08-17a188b8be46/is-the-nca-exam-open-book-online-exam-rules-proctoring-and-what-to-bring) - Plan your order around the calendar and the 10–12 week wait for results: [which exam first?](https://lexn.ca/circles/general/71178d6f-f96a-4390-a192-15a399e68bc5/which-nca-exam-should-i-take-first-exam-order-and-pacing) - Learn what examiners reward ([how to write an answer that passes](https://lexn.ca/circles/general/bac73586-af94-4f8c-8d79-348197c89af5/how-to-write-an-nca-exam-answer-that-passes-irac-timing-and-common-mistakes)) and what to expect from each subject ([which exam is hardest?](https://lexn.ca/circles/general/c4bf95b0-39b5-4d78-a327-8b8c511abd4a/which-nca-exam-is-the-hardest-what-candidates-say-about-each-subject)). - [Choosing additional subjects](https://lexn.ca/circles/general/b16023f3-14b7-49f8-92f0-c31fc7fc4cce/nca-optional-exams-choosing-between-remedies-evidence-business-organizations-com).
